Land Acknowledgment
The Sankofa Futures Initiative Center acknowledges that its work takes place across the traditional territories of the Indigenous peoples who have been the original stewards of this land since time immemorial. We honour their enduring presence, sovereignty, and deep connection to the lands, waters, and communities of what is now called Canada. As an organization rooted in the pursuit of equity and community empowerment, we stand in solidarity with and in allyship to Indigenous peoples and communities.
Who We Are
The Sankofa Futures Initiative Center is a federally incorporated and provincially registered Canadian not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering pan-African, African diaspora, and racialized and marginalized communities by drawing on the knowledge and lessons of the past to build equitable, sustainable, and prosperous futures.
Rooted in the Akan philosophy of Sankofa, which teaches that we must look back to move forward, the Center was established in response to a persistent gap in community-centered research, education, and development work that reflects the lived realities, histories, and aspirations of the communities we serve. We exist because systemic inequity demands systemic response, and because lasting change must be grounded in cultural identity, historical truth, and collective agency.
Our Mission
To advance the well-being and empowerment of pan-African, African diaspora, and racialized and marginalized communities through culturally grounded research, transformative education, inclusive community development, and bold policy advocacy.
Our Vision
A Canada, and a world, in which pan-African, African diaspora, and racialized and marginalized communities hold the resources, recognition, and power to build equitable and prosperous futures.
What We Do
All of our work is guided by an intergenerational lens, honouring the knowledge, struggles, and achievements of those who came before us, investing in the potential of those who are here now, and building foundations that will serve the generations yet to come.
Our work spans five interconnected areas: Research and Academia, Community Development, Youth Education and Programs, Policy and Advocacy, and Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Our name and Symbol
The name Sankofa comes from the Akan people of West Africa. It is represented by a bird that flies forward while looking back. The word means: it is not wrong to go back for what you forgot. For us, Sankofa is not simply a name. It is a philosophy of practice.
